Volunteering and pet adoption

  • New Leash on Life:  A prison-dog training program, dedicated to improving the life of prisoners and saving the lives of dogs.

  • Animal Care and Control Team Philly:  Provides shelter, care and lifesaving efforts for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals in Philadelphia.

  • Brenda’s Cat Rescue: An all volunteer non-profit rescue organization dedicated to ending the suffering of stray and abandoned cats through rescue, sterilization, education, and adoption.

  • PAWS: Animal shelter and provider of affordable, basic veterinary care (including low-cost spays, neuters, microchipping, and vaccines) for pet owners and rescue organizations that cannot otherwise access it.

  • Providence Animal Center, Media, PA: Animal shelter and provider of low-cost comprehensive veterinary care for all, including dental cleanings.

Food

  • Weaver’s Way Pet Store (Across the Way), Philadelphia: a source of excellent dog and cat food, including raw foods (be sure to check out the freezer section!), supplements, and other supplies.

  • Northwest Naturals and Primal frozen and freeze-dried raw foods for dogs and cats.  In Philadelphia, these are available at Weavers Way Co-op, Bone Appetite, and many other locations.

Whole food supplements

  • Pet Omega-3 Formula by Nordic Naturals. Available at Weavers Way Co-op and online.  Particularly important for patients experiencing skin allergies and gastrointestinal and arthritic conditions.

  • Probiotics: Proviable. Available online.  Especially good for dogs and cats with digestive issues or individuals who are or have been on antibiotics.

  • Cosequin, a glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate combination. Available online. Great for arthritic dogs and cats.
